ARTEMIDE PRESENTS AGATHE AND ULRICH UND DIOTIMA: TWO WALL LIGHTS BY CARLOTTA DE BEVILACQUA

Artemide continues its exploration of light as a synthesis of technological innovation and design culture, expanding its catalogue with two new wall light collections by Carlotta De Bevilacqua.

Agathe works through subtraction, paring the wall light back to its essential function; Ulrich und Diotima, by contrast, works through contrast itself, pairing essential structural components with hand-crafted blown glass. Two opposing approaches converging on the same goal: minimising bulk and letting light take centre stage.

Built on the pure geometry of the cuboid, Agathe presents itself as a compact, rigorous volume, its identity resting on bidirectional lighting, upward and downward, made possible by two diffusers set back within the body of the fixture.

Clean lines and a broad range of finishes allow it to sit discreetly in any setting, from residential to contract, while its dimmable light output enhances the surrounding architectural surfaces.

Ulrich und Diotima, meanwhile, emerges from the meeting of two opposing spirits: the absolute sobriety of the bases and the rich colour and texture of the glass that crowns them. The bases, reduced to an essential geometry, show how a minimal form can still meet complex technical requirements: inside, an optoelectronic system with mains-voltage LEDs delivers high-quality light while drastically reducing the space taken up by components.

In the first version, a small square volume with rounded edges barely emerges from the wall—just enough to correctly direct the beam—while the fixing point stays hidden thanks to a flush recessed mount. In the second, the base takes on an L-shaped profile, following its contour and allowing it to be fixed to the wall.

The name itself recalls two characters from Musil's novel: Ulrich, seemingly without qualities yet possessed of an extraordinary mind, and Diotima, his cousin, lighter in temperament yet able to charm and draw people in with natural ease. In the same way, the collection brings together the almost anonymous rigour of the bases with the expressiveness of a blown Craquelé glass sphere, created through a thermal shock process that makes every piece unique and unrepeatable.
